Health and safety review

Over the last two years the University has been carrying out a comprehensive review of how we manage health and safety. This will lead to changes that will make our staff safer - as well as our students and visitors to the University.

The review was important as we want everyone to feel confident about the safety of their working environment. Our health and safety performance should reflect the University's position as a world leader in research and teaching. We must therefore manage the health and safety risks from those activities on a daily basis.

The University worked with the Health & Safety Executive, using its ASCENT model, to make sure the review achieved our aims. There were two parts to the review:

  • An assessment of our safety culture through a Safety Climate Survey of all staff in early 2020, followed by a series of staff focus groups
  • A comprehensive evaluation of governance, leadership and management

The University's Council has approved the resulting recommendations, which will help us evolve and action-oriented safety culture. That means all of us feeling confident and competent to take action to keep ourselves and others safe.

The changes we plan to make will focus on improving leadership, engagement, competency, networking, reporting and systems. Importantly, our staff will be directly involved in creating the changes needed to improve our safety culture.
