From 1 October 2025, departments will contribute £30 per delegate for selected high-hazard courses. This six-month pilot will be reviewed to assess cost savings and training uptake. Departments are encouraged to plan for this change in their budgets.
Why the change?
In the past year, completions of Safety Office training courses almost tripled (from 650 in 2023/24 to 1,900 in 2024/25), following the change to a new training provider. This has driven costs up to £110k. This level of demand is unsustainable, but we are committed to keeping these high-quality courses available. Improving training quality and uptake supports Recommendation 4 of the H&S Review by strengthening staff and student competence to work safely. Feedback on the new provider has been very positive, with courses described as practical, relevant and well-presented, and the departmental contribution will help ensure high-quality training remains accessible to those with genuine work-related needs.
