How to manage the specific risks posed to young people and children at the University
This policy covers different occasions when young people may need to access University premises. These include as part of planned educational visits, or occasionally with their parents due to emergency childcare problems/as part of planned staff events.
Young persons may need access to University workplaces as part of development programs, apprenticeship or work experience placements. A young person is anyone under the age of 18. If a young person is going to be in the workplace, a risk assessment and related precautions are needed. Access to certain chemicals must be avoided and extra supervision given during hazardous activities.
The University young persons policy provides information on the processes needed to ensure a young person's safety at work. The policy does not provide information on safeguarding which can be found via the safeguarding team. The policy also provides information to help departments understand the arrangements needed for occasional visits, including the use of pop-up childcare at staff events.
